Article of the Week
Part of the reason students have such a hard time reading is because they bring little prior knowledge and background to the written page. They can decode the words, but the words remain meaningless without an understanding of how they fit into the greater context of the world around us.
To help build prior knowledge, I will assign an "Article of the Week" every Monday morning. If students are to become literate, they must broaden their reading experiences into real-world text.
To the right, you will find the articles we will read this semester. Please note, all articles are subject to the copyright protections stipulated by the original source.
Please read, annotate, and write a one-page response to the article. Responses can be typed (and double-spaced) or written in your notebooks. Be prepared to discuss it in class each Friday.
